A Random Update

Ahren: is really becoming a proficient reader.  He reads everything and it makes my heart happy when he says to me "mom, I'm going to read over here by myself".  Love it!  1st grade is great for him.  He gets along well with others and doesn't really give me too many details.  But, from a boy's point of view, I think no news is good news.  And, I haven't had any phone calls or emails from his teacher :)  Ahren did tell me that Mrs. Eaton told him he needed to work on his handwriting.  No surprise there.  After school he goes outside to play football by himself until dad gets home.  Sometimes the girls get their pom pons and cheer him on.  So cute!  He seriously loves anything to do with football or baseball and hunting.  Counting down the days until he gets to go with dad and shoot his own gun!

Lydia: loves Kindergarten.  Her favorite subject is art.  Again, no surprise.  She brings pictures home everyday with drawings of animals and objects that are seriously better than I could do!  Her reading skills are improving.  She likes to practice - I'll take it.  She had a play date the other day with a boy.  Some of the girls in her class teased her and said that she and Tommy were 'dating'.  The girls didn't have any idea what that meant, and neither did Lydia.  We had a discussion about what dating meant and how that's what older kids and moms and dads do when they like each other.  She would have settled to know that it just meant she went on a play date.  It didn't help that the girls laughed at her when she asked them what it meant...even though they didn't know either.  Oh, the drama.

Annie: is in 4-day preschool this year.  She is very upset when Fri, Sat, and Sun come around because that means she doesn't get to to go school.  The first day she told me she made a friend and her name is Caroline.  Just yesterday she told me that Caroline doesn't like it when she follows her around because she likes to play by herself.  What surprised me the most about this conversation was that Annie wasn't upset that Caroline said that to her.  It was just a very matter of fact statement.  If someone said that to Lydia there would have been tears.  Not with Annie - she probably kept following her or just went and played with someone else.  I love that about her - she is very confident in who she is.

Maria: she's 2.  That's almost enough said about this one.  She's fully potty trained during the day and even has many dry nights.  She initiated this herself at 25 months.  This says a little about the determination of this girl.  She is all sweet until she isn't.  She loves to sing "twinkle, twinkle little star" and "itsy bitsy spider".  She is afraid of spiders - to the point that she almost hyperventilates. She loves to pray at dinner time, in the car at school drop off and at bedtime.  The other night she thanked God for pancakes and balloons.  Those are the sort of memories that I want to remember about this age.  Not the fact that she likes to get the yogurt container out of the fridge and drink it while I'm busy cleaning the bathroom.

My hands are full...but so is my heart!
